Australia's greatest success story

John Casell and the Jimmy Watson trophy

The Australian wine industry's greatest success story just got even better thanks to the release of two new trophy-winning wines under the new [yellow tail] Premium label.

The two wines in this new range are the Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning 2003 Premium Cabernet Sauvignon, from Wrattonbully, and the Stodart Trophy-winning 2003 Premium Shiraz, from McLaren Vale.

Both wines showcase the great winemaking talents at Casella Wines, as well as the terrific vineyard resources in some of Australia's greatest wine-producing regions that the family can draw on.

The [yellow tail] Premium Cabernet Sauvignon 2003, winner of the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for 2004, held at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, hails from two of the finest vineyards in South Australia's Wrattonbully region, at the heart of the Limestone Coast.  Sourced from low-yielding vineyards, this wine was given a pre-fermentation cold soak before undergoing primary and then malolactic fermentation in American oak barriques. The result is a wine of great complexity and structure, with ripe blackcurrant and plum flavours, integrated oak character and fine, long tannins. Drink now or cellar for 10 years, as this wine will continue to deliver in quality and taste.

The grapes for the [yellow tail] Premium Shiraz 2003, winner of the 2004 Stodart Trophy at the Royal Brisbane Wine Show, were sourced from a 15-year-old vineyard in South Australia's renowned McLaren Vale region. The loamy soils provided good moisture for the vines to ripen consistently, resulting in fruit that was big, balanced in flavour and deep in colour. The resultant wine displays classic spice and ripe-berry notes, integrated oak characters and a concentration of flavour, for which the very finest Australian Shiraz is renowned. Drink now or cellar for another eight years, as this wine will continue to deliver in quality and taste.
